What Is a Naturopath — And Could It Be What You've Been Missing?

  • If you've ever left a doctor's appointment feeling like your concerns were brushed off, your test results came back "normal" but you still feel anything but, or you've been told to just go on the pill and see how you go — you're not alone. And you're exactly who naturopathic medicine was made for.

There's a lot of confusion out there about what a naturopath actually does, what a consultation looks like, and whether it's worth your time (and money). So let's clear that up — properly, honestly, and without the woo.

Tash is a naturopath holding a Bachelor of Health Science in Naturopathy, practising online across Australia. She specialises in women's health including hormonal imbalances, PCOS, endometriosis, gut health, skin, vaginal microbiome, and the nervous system.

  • A naturopath is a qualified allied health practitioner who takes a whole-body approach to health — looking at the physical, biochemical, and lifestyle factors that are contributing to what you're experiencing, rather than just treating the symptom in isolation.

In Australia, a Bachelor of Health Science in Naturopathy is a four-year university-level degree covering anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, clinical nutrition, herbal medicine, and evidence-based practice. It's a clinical training grounded in both traditional health philosophy and modern science.

I am Tash Goldfinch — a Melbourne-based naturopath holding a Bachelor of Health Science in Naturopathy, specialising in women's health, hormones, and everything in between. I offer online consultations across Australia, which means wherever you are, you can access evidence-led, personalised naturopathic care from the comfort of your own home.

  • The short answer: a naturopath helps you figure out why you feel the way you do — and then works with you to actually do something about it.

The longer answer is that naturopathic medicine is built on a core philosophy of finding and treating the root cause of dysfunction, not just suppressing symptoms. That means asking the questions your GP might not have time to ask, ordering the functional testing that conventional medicine doesn't always prioritise, and putting together a picture of your health that makes sense of everything you've been experiencing.

My approach sits at the intersection of traditional naturopathic philosophy and current clinical evidence. I'm interested in understanding your body, your history, and your goals — and building a care plan that's actually going to get you results.

Here's what that looks like in practice:

Detailed health history taking. Your first consultation is thorough. We go through everything — your menstrual cycle, your digestion, your skin, your sleep, your stress levels, your diet, your medication, your previous test results. Nothing is irrelevant when we're trying to understand the full picture.

Functional and pathology testing. Where appropriate, I can refer for blood tests, hormone panels, Dutch testing, stool analysis, and other functional investigations. This isn't guesswork — it's data-driven care.

Clinical nutrition. Food is medicine. Nutritional recommendations are evidence-based, realistic, and tailored to you.

Herbal medicine. Herbal medicine has thousands of years of traditional use, and a growing body of clinical research to back it up. I prescribe practitioner-grade liquid herbal formulas and/or supplements specific to your needs and presentation.

Lifestyle and cycle support. Particularly for women's health, understanding how your hormones fluctuate across your cycle — and how to work with that, not against it — is genuinely life-changing.

Collaboration with your GP and other practitioners. I work alongside conventional medicine, not instead of it. If something needs a referral, a prescription, or a specialist, I'll tell you — and I'll support that process alongside your doctor and your needs.

  • Naturopathic medicine has particular clinical depth in chronic, complex, and hormonally-driven conditions — the kind that often fall through the gaps in conventional care.

    I work with women navigating:

    • PCOS and hormonal imbalances — irregular cycles, elevated androgens, insulin resistance, and the cascade of symptoms that come with them

    • Endometriosis and period pain — because "just take ibuprofen" is not a care plan

    • Gut health and bloating — including IBS, SIBO, digestive discomfort, and the gut-hormone connection

    • Skin concerns — acne, eczema, and the hormonal and gut drivers

    • Vaginal microbiome health — recurrent BV, thrush, and UTIs that keep coming back no matter what you try

    • Perimenopause and menopause — navigating the hormonal transition with evidence-based support

If you've been told your results are normal but you're still suffering, or if you feel like you're just not being heard — this is the kind of medicine that finally takes you seriously.

  • If you've never seen a naturopath before, here's exactly what to expect when you book a consultation.

    Before Your Appointment

You'll receive an intake form to complete before we meet. This covers your health history, current medications and supplements, menstrual cycle details, diet overview, and your main health goals. The more thorough you are, the more productive our time together will be. Don't hold back — there are no irrelevant details.

    Your Initial Consultation (60–90 minutes)

Your first appointment is longer than you're probably used to. We'll go through your intake form together, and I'll ask follow-up questions to build a complete clinical picture. We'll talk about your symptoms, your history, what you've already tried, and what you're hoping to achieve.

By the end of your initial consultation, you'll leave with:

    • A clear understanding of what's likely driving your symptoms

    • An initial treatment plan covering nutrition, lifestyle, and supplementation

    • Any relevant test referrals

    • A follow-up plan

    A real, personalised plan.

    Follow-Up Consultations (30–45 minutes)

Follow-ups are where the real work happens. We review how you've responded to the initial plan, interpret any test results that have come back, and adjust your protocol as needed. Healing isn't linear, and your plan shouldn't be either.

Online Consultations — What That Looks Like

All consultations are conducted online via video call, which means you can access naturopathic care from anywhere in Australia. No commute, no waiting room, no taking time off work. Just a proper, thorough consultation from wherever you're most comfortable.

Practitioner-grade supplements and herbal formulas can be prescribed and dispatched directly to your door. Everything that's available in a clinic is available to you online.

  • This is the question I get asked most — and I love it, because it means you're thinking critically.

The honest answer: it depends on the practitioner.

Naturopathy as a profession sits on a spectrum. On one end, you'll find practitioners who rely heavily on tradition, intuition, and practices that aren't well-supported by current research. On the other, you'll find clinicians who are committed to applying the best available evidence to naturopathic principles — which means staying up to date with the research, being transparent about what we know and don't know, and never recommending something just because it's "natural."

Every recommendation I make is grounded in both traditional rationale and current evidence.

  • No. Absolutely not.

One of the things I feel strongly about is that naturopathic medicine works best as a complement to conventional care. Your GP is an essential part of your healthcare team. So is your specialist, your physio, your psychologist.

What naturopathy offers is depth — the time, the lens, and the tools to look at what's happening in your body from a different angle. In an ideal world, every patient would have access to both. That's the model I work within.

  • If any of this has resonated — if you've been dismissing your symptoms, told everything is "fine," or just struggling to get answers — a naturopathic consultation might be exactly what's been missing.

I work exclusively with women online across Australia, with a particular focus on hormones, reproductive health, gut health, skin, and vaginal microbiome. Every consultation is evidence-led, thoroughly personalised, and built around what your body actually needs.

    Online bookings are open.
